![]() The update was a minor one, focusing on fixing lingering issues in Yosemite, like problems with Wi-Fi, issues with Safari web pages loading slowly, and problems with audio and video syncing when using Bluetooth headphones. Prior to releasing OS X 10.10.3, Apple launched 10.10.2 in January. When right clicking as one would to get a dictionary definition, there's now more information available from sources like iTunes, the App Store, and there are movie showtimes, nearby locations, and more. It added direct support for Google 2-factor authentication when setting up Google services in the Internet Accounts section of System Preferences, included new Force Touch APIs for developers, and new data sources for the "Look Up" feature. OS X 10.10.3 also introduced an updated emoji menu plus new emoji options and emoji skin tone modifiers. A new Tab View also made it easier to manage multiple open tabs across various sites, while the more robust Spotlight functionality brought more power to the Safari search bar. Yosemite also included a number of feature improvements, such as a "Today" view in Notification Center, that offers a wider variety of information including integration with third-party apps and Spotlight search, which was been improved with new data sources, behaving more like a search engine by pulling in data from Wikipedia, Maps, movies, news, and more.Īpple also brought improvements to a number of core OS X apps in Yosemite, including Safari, which featured a streamlined toolbar, a new "Favorites" view for bookmarks, and frequently visited sites. ![]() OS X Yosemite introduced a number of visual changes, including a flatter, more modern look that emphasizes translucency, streamlined toolbars, and smarter controls. ![]() Apple also launched a public beta for OS X Yosemite for the first time, allowing more than a million users to test the software before its release. Originally unveiled during Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference on June 2, 2014, Yosemite went through several months of beta testing before it saw its public release. ![]() Prospective users needed 2GB of RAM and 8GB of storage space, along with Snow Leopard at a minimum as Mac App Store access was required. OS X Yosemite was made available through the Mac App Store at no cost. It was succeeded by OS X El Capitan on September 30, 2015. Apple released OS X Yosemite to the public on October 16, 2014, following a media event that saw the unveiling of new iPads, a new Retina iMac, and a new Mac mini. ![]()

![]() ![]() We compare this to the Glencoe text - as this is the start of the second semester, the students out to be starting Chapter 7 (out of 12) - the first chapter of Volume 2. ![]() The class was working out of another MathLinks packet, 6-9, which is called Expressions and Equations 1. ![]() Today, as the second semester begins, I subbed in a sixth grade math classroom, for a teacher who is out for three days. Then when he tries to grab some of the oobleck, it pours through his fingers like a liquid once again. In a bowl it looks like a liquid, but when Kung punches the bowl, it feels solid on his fist. This causes oobleck to exhibit some of the properties of both solids in liquids. The Quick Conundrum for today involves something called "oobleck." Oobleck is just a mixture of corn starch and water, but the starch isn't completely dissolved in the water. My written description of this Rolling Spool Paradox won't do it justice, so let me provide a link where you can see what's going on: Basically, depending on which way you pull on the thread, it's possible to make the spool move forwards or backwards. His final paradox involves a spool of string. He adds that the idea that information takes time to transmit will show up in his later lectures. He says that it's as if information - namely, the fact that the Slinky has been cut - takes time for it to arrive at the bottom of the Slinky. The two opposing forces, gravity and the recoil, balance out exactly, so the bottom continues to float in the air until the top finishes recoiling as it falls - only then will the bottom of the Slinky fall to the ground. Well, when Kung cuts the Slinky, the bottom actually does neither. Then he asks, what would happen to the bottom of the Slinky if he were to detach the toy from the ceiling? It could be that gravity will cause the bottom to descend, but it could also be that the Slinky will recoil, thereby causing the bottom to ascend. He hangs a toy from the ceiling, which causes gravity to stretch it out a little. Next, Kung moves on to some paradoxes involving springs, but he demonstrates these by using a very large spring - also known as a Slinky. You simply take a large tank the same shape as the ship, pour in the gallon of water, and then add the ship. Kung begins the lecture by describing how to float a ship in one gallon of water. ![]() They are able to use technological tools to explore and deepen their understanding of concepts.Lecture 15 of David Kung's Mind-Bending Math is called "Enigmas of Everyday Objects." I've heard of many of these mathematical paradoxes before, but actually, most of the paradoxes Dave Kung describes in this lecture pertain more to physics and are new to me. Mathematically proficient students at various grade levels are able to identify relevant external mathematical resources, such as digital content located on a website, and use them to pose or solve problems. When making mathematical models, they know that technology can enable them to visualize the results of varying assumptions, explore consequences, and compare predictions with data. They detect possible errors by strategically using estimation and other mathematical knowledge. For example, mathematically proficient high school students analyze graphs of functions and solutions generated using a graphing calculator. Proficient students are sufficiently familiar with tools appropriate for their grade or course to make sound decisions about when each of these tools might be helpful, recognizing both the insight to be gained and their limitations. These tools might include pencil and paper, concrete models, a ruler, a protractor, a calculator, a spreadsheet, a computer algebra system, a statistical package, or dynamic geometry software. Mathematically proficient students consider the available tools when solving a mathematical problem. Visit the video excerpts below to view multiple examples of these teachers. A teacher of adolescents and young adults might have established norms for accessing tools during the students' group "tinkering processes," allowing students to use paper strips, brass fasteners, and protractors to create and test quadrilateral "kite" models. A middle childhood teacher might have his students select different color tiles to show repetition in a patterning task. Teachers who are developing students' capacity to "use appropriate tools strategically" make clear to students why the use of manipulatives, rulers, compasses, protractors, and other tools will aid their problem solving processes. ![]() ![]() ![]() For instance, better Euclidean solutions can be found using k-medians and k-medoids. k-means clustering minimizes within-cluster variances ( squared Euclidean distances), but not regular Euclidean distances, which would be the more difficult Weber problem: the mean optimizes squared errors, whereas only the geometric median minimizes Euclidean distances. This results in a partitioning of the data space into Voronoi cells. This alternative approach is referred to as Scheme 2.K-means clustering is a method of vector quantization, originally from signal processing, that aims to partition n observations into k clusters in which each observation belongs to the cluster with the nearest mean (cluster centers or cluster centroid), serving as a prototype of the cluster. ![]() Classify a new feature x to the class of the closest prototype.Associate the prototype with the class that has the highest count. For each prototype, count the number of samples from each class that are assigned to this prototype.Apply k-means clustering to the entire training data, using M prototypes.During the classification of a new data point, the procedure then goes in the same way as Scheme 1. The dominant class with the most data points is associated with the prototype. To associate a prototype with a class, we count the number of data points in each class that are assigned to this prototype. ![]() There's no guarantee that points in the same group are of the same class because we conducted k-means on the class blended data. The second scheme of classification by k-means is to put all the data points together and perform k-means once. Another Approach for using K-Means - Scheme 2 Because we have more than one prototype for each class, the classification boundary between the two classes is connected segments of the straight lines, which gives a zigzag look. The region around each prototype is sometimes called the voronoi region and is bounded by hyperplanes. Every prototype occupies some region in the space. The decision boundary between any two prototypes based on the nearest neighbor rule is linear. Specifically, these are the classification boundaries induced by the set of prototypes based on the nearest neighbor. The black lines are classification boundaries generated by the k-means algorithm. Then, depending on the color code of that prototype, the corresponding class will be assigned to the new point. We can see below that for each class, the 5 prototypes chosen are shown by filled circles.Īccording to the classification scheme, for any new point, among these 15 prototypes, we would find the one closest to this new point. The authors applied k-means using 5 prototypes for each class. There are three classes green, red, and blue. This above approach to using k-means for classification is referred to as Scheme 1.īelow is a result from the textbook using this scheme.
![]() ![]() Cultural, historical, spiritual, amenity, and intrinsic values are the heritage of future generations and damage to these values is often irreversible." The legislative basis for this is found in the Conservation Act, the Resource Management Act, and the Treaty of Waitangi, which states: The Pīkao Recovery Group's work is based on the aims of the communities and groups who want to see pīkao re-established on the Otago coast. DOC's workĪ pīkao recovery group has been set up with representation from a number of groups including DOC, Dunedin City Council, Otago Regional Council, Yellow Eyed Penguin Trust, the Runaka o Kāi Tahu, and other community conservation groups. Other threats to the plant include sand mining and indiscriminate use of vehicles in dune areas. This can be a major problem in areas with high rabbit numbers where the plant is being re-established. Originally the damage on coastal properties was done by sheep and cattle, but rabbits and possums have also developed a taste for pīkao. Several plantations along the Horowhenua-Wanganui coastline are good examples. Many dune areas that were once covered in pīkao are now stabilised by pinus radiata plantations. As a result pīkao succumbs to the invader's pressure.īurning by early settlers was a major reason for pīkao's decline along with land development for agriculture and forestry. One of the reasons that marram is so competitive is that it turns more mobile dune habitats (pīkao's preference) into a much more stable environment. Together they literally smother the smaller and far less competitive pīkao.īecause of its invasive qualities, marram has been used a lot on reclamation and development projects, often at the expense of pīkao remnants. Marram's nitrogen fixing companion plant, the yellow tree lupin, arrived around the same time. ![]() The greatest threat to pīkao is considered to be marram grass which was introduced at the turn of the 20th century to stabilise areas that had been protected by pīkao but had been burnt from around the 1880s onwards. Pīkao's disappearance from the coastal environment can be attributed to a wide range of influences and events. Southern Māori once wore woven pīkao chest protectors in battle and when the young shoots were steamed, it was used as a food. It's used extensively on tukutuku panels in the wharenui, as well as for making kete (bags), pōtae (hats) and whāriki (mats) and many other functional or decorative items. Pīkao is a taoka or treasure one of four main native fibres used by iwi for weaving and sought after because the dried leaves are a brilliant yellow. In the south, therefore, pīkao is hardier more compact and erect, has fewer rhizomes and withstands cold winters. In the north the plant has sprawling rhizomes, but heavy frost will knock these back. It's thought that the regional differences in pīkao's morphology relate to frost tolerance. Naturally occuring pīkao is a good indicator of biodiversity in a coastal environment. ![]() It does this between its leaves, around the plant's base and with the long rope-like rhizomes or runners it sends out.īy allowing or encouraging sand dunes to form, pīkao creates an environment in which other native coastal species can establish and flourish. Pīkao is found only in New Zealand and is one of our major native dune builders, stabilising sandy areas by trapping wind-blown sand. Today only a few remnant populations remain. Stunning pīkao stands would once have been found on almost every sandy beach, from Northland to Rakiura (Stewart Island) and the Chatham Islands. In spring it produces flower heads up to 30 cm long, with dark brown flowers that spiral around the stem. It has stiff, curled leaves that can be a brilliant green - especially when young - golden yellow or, on more mature plants, a fiery orange. Pīkao or pīngao, the golden sand sedge ( Ficinia), is a native sand-binding sedge that plays an important role in New Zealand's dune ecosystems. ![]() ![]() ![]() Once a product is selected you can view a list with technical information about its components, supported operating systems, memory and graphics specs, connections and expansion, history, notes and external links to related webpages. ![]() This feature comes in handy if you have multiple apple products such as iPods, Apple TVs, iPhones, iPads, iMacs or MacBooks.
